Bell On The Common, Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire   2 comments

Bell on the Common Broughton Gifford trays

As I turned a sharp corner to head into Broughton Gifford village, the Bell caught my eye to my right.  I hadn’t spotted this on the maps when I reccy-ed the route; surprised, I stopped in and plotted a route change that would allow me to clear pubs in this area more efficiently (and still pick up the originally planned batch on a subsequent long run).  The only real issue was the resulting ten mile canal trot and Caen Hill climb after the last of six pints…but, gentle reader, I felt I must do it for you.

It was the second packed house before 1pm and despite the fine spread of food available the crowd seemed to be focused on drinking and socialising. There’s a big, open hearth adjacent to the bar and the fire was welcome relief from the damp, nippy air outside and the rapidly chilling sweat on my shirts.  Glad I spotted this one…a good country pub is a gem to find.
