Old Ham Tree Holt sign

On the trot downhill from the Fox, I spotted these signs and couldn’t get the Supremes out of my head:

Holt...in the name of love

Holt! In the name of love…

That is, until I stepped in from the cold and was greeted by the sounds of a great slack key blues album playing in the background. The Old Ham Tree staff (it appears to be a family run joint) were pulling my pint before I could remove my backpack and had it in front of me before I could scrape together my coins from therein.

The crowd inside was lively but civilised despite the inordinately large population of children (still Mother’s Day…will this hell never end?) and the endlessly flowing spirits from behind the bar.  Accosted more than once by the house spaniel (I assume as he seemed to know the landlord, anyway), this was easily my favourite stop of the day.
