…five minutes down the road from the Turnpike, the Vale of the White Horse Inn appeared on my right.  Inside the small front bar I was confronted with a choice of five ales (went with the Stunner) and the morgue-waiting-room silence of the few diners there; I took my beer over to the larger back room which was raucous and packed.

I started doing the timetable calculation: I could guzzle this fine beer and have time to hit the Forester’s as well and still make the 2:28 bus if I could manage to run the final 8 miles in an hour and without incident.  But, the 3:28 would allow time for an extra stop, a bit of a relaxed lope back, and a chance to savour the beverage and the atmosphere.  It was a major decision and I didn’t want to rush it.
