The landlord needed a quantity surveyor to inspect the house so I burned up a vacation day to let them in.  Once they left, I was at loose ends and jogged down to the Locomotive, a new pub in the town centre.  Well, I say new but the Locomotive Hotel was serving drinks here a century ago.  This new incarnation occupies half the original building with the Mailcoach filling the rear.

The bar opened early in July and has kept a full calendar of musical acts that, unusual for Swindon, aren’t merely cover bands (to be fair, the Beehive and the Donkey both have original music on a regular basis).  I got a loverly pint of ale — a Mr Chubb’s Lunchtime Bitter — for only £2.40 and enjoyed it to the strains of, first, an early Beatles album then some surf metal which put me back in the mood to attack the hill climb back to the house.

Here’s a map.
