Herschel Arms Slough sign

Barring the dearth of real ale, the Herschel Arms is one of the most perfect bars I have been to in the last few months (which, in an odd way, is a testament to the dearth of bars I been to in the last few months).  Still, it is cluttered, run down, and designed for drinking and socialising NOT for being part of ‘a scene’ — although there is a prominent sign just in the entrance directing ‘hippies’ away from the main bar so maybe the scene in question is over there.

The bartender and the 3 patrons that were there 3 hours earlier (when we were still looking for food before Jackie’s appointment) were in constant flux and the full superfluity was never there all at once for longer than it took for one of them to roll or otherwise produce a cigarette for a quick trip outside.

I guess the house it has most in common with is Manuel’s Tavern in Atlanta (before they stunk up the place with craft beers and hipster bartenders).  Oh, it is named for the Astronomer Royal (in the late 18th century) who discovered (among other things) Uranus — so the motto of Slough should be, “We’re not quite the anus of the Universe, but you can see Uranus from here.”
