Grocer, Spitalfields, London   2 comments

Wet, cold, and already disappointed by the crappy collection of graffiti on display in the outdoor gallery that Shoreditch was pitched to be, I entered Spitalfields Market with a sense of foreboding mostly because the last time I visited, in 2009, it was already so much less a real market than a tourist spot.

It is so much worse, now.

So, it was unsurprising that the Grocer had all the charm of a bar in an American shopping mall (one located in an upscale suburban neighbourhood, at that).  Dreadful.

And, the customers who happily pay the £5.50 vig on a pint of Neck Oil all look the part: I felt like I had entered the photo shoot for a fashion spread in the Financial Times or Banker’s Weekly…suits that would cost me two month’s wages or, for those more casually draped, haircuts that cost only half that much.

A hipster amusement park.  We are not amused.
