Montagu Pyke, Soho, London   2 comments

Hiking from an anti-Trump rally at the US Embassy to meet-up with the wife after work in Holborn, I dipped down toward Chinatown with the intent of picking up some unusual items for the pantry. But, the cold started to seep in and I opted to cut-back to the north and through the theatres. On my way to Denmark Street to window shop musical instruments as I passed through, I spotted the Montagu Pyke, a Wetherspoons pub. This would be a good place to warm up, I thought; in a fashionable district, an unfashionable and cut-rate pub would be a relaxing stop.

The place was absolutely rammed with people although 10-15% of them would leave en masse every few minutes as the performances they were in the City to see opened their doors. I was a little surprised by the price of the beer, too. Wetherspoons usually keeps the prices down but these were as steep as in other bars. The staff had even taken Sharpies out and changed the placemats advertising “Fish Friday” so that the prices £6.75 with soft drink and £7.75 with alcoholic drink were crudely crossed out and marked as £8.49 and £9.99.
