GB Kebabs, Ruislip, Middlesex   Leave a comment

There is a pharmacy right next to GB Kebab.  This is probably a codicil of the business license.  On the other hand, my gut microbiome will never be healthier or more diverse if I can ever flush away the salt.

Streatham Kebab, Fish and Chips House, Streatham, London   2 comments

Up at 5:30 Monday and out of the house at 7:30 without breakfast, I had a pint at 9 then three more at the tail end of the day’s run.  I was starved as I ran the final segment to the station when the aroma of fetid lamb fat (my favourite!) wafted out of the Streatham Kebab, Fish & Chips House.  “Döner meat and chips, please,” and I waited patiently as the elephant leg spun slowly before the heater.  The chilli sauce could have been thicker and hotter, but I couldn’t fault any of the rest of this divine ½ kg of stomach distress.

Yummy.

Best Kebab, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire   2 comments

I had a long journey home and knew I wouldn’t fancy cooking so I looked around for dinner near the station.  The runs today and yesterday had taken their toll on me and I felt I could eat just about anything and absorb the worst it had to offer.  The worst that the Best Kebab had to offer was an insidious saltiness that had me at the water tap all night but the kebab wasn’t too fatty and it tasted more like actual lamb than filler.  I’ve definitely had worse.

Kebab Centre, Ruislip, Middlesex   Leave a comment

The reason I made such a big deal about Uncle Jim’s kebab was that it was so unusual: most kebabs you get were like the one I inflicted on myself (or, rather, with which I afflicted myself) at the Kebab Centre in Ruislip yesterday.  Yuck.  I couldn’t decide if it was the meat or the salad that imparted the rotting compost essence but the congealed grease that collected in my mouth and esophagus definitely came from the Beast that was passed off as lamb (as did the salt that had me attached to a water bottle for the next 6 hours: I drank as much water last night as I would, usually, in 2 days).

Uncle Jim’s, Richmond, London   1 comment

I was hungry after a day of running and drinking and I really wanted a bit of cod but a guy at the Red Cow pointed me to Uncle Jim’s and I hope someday to thank him in person.  The meat was actually chunks of lamb (not some minced and reconstituted elephant leg like in most kebaberies).  The chips were perfect and the chilli sauce actually contained Habanero (Scotch bonnet) peppers and had a real heat to it.  The small was too much food but I would have gorged on two large orders if I had them in front of me.  Yum.

Heathrow Fish & Chips Best Kebab, Harmondsworth, London   1 comment

I haven’t had doner meat and chips in 14 months and went to the Heathrow Fish & Chips Best Kebab Eat In or Takeaway Restaurant to have a bit of cod but didn’t want to wait for the fish to cook.  I bet it would have been excellent because the meat was divine.  Go soon: this is part of the planned and unnecessary expansion of Heathrow.

7 Years in Britain   1 comment

7-year-itch

For what it’s worth, today we have beaten the Statutes of Limitations on most felonies in the United States: 7 years and a day since we moved to England.  Here’s the breakdown of this most recent year (noting that the annual run review already covered the calendar year 2015 so this will be a relatively brief look back at the residence year).

Speaking of residence, we were granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in June.  I visited 167 new pubs (plus 10 in the new Irish category) and ran slightly more than 2515 miles (including 86 miles in one go).  There were trips to Maastricht, Tennessee & Atlanta, and Ireland (where we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary).  There were 22 new Fish and Chips entries to the blog (and 3 kebabs) but not a lot of experimentation in the kitchen (only 6 Recipes added).

Going into year 8 there are no goals, no major plans, and no great expectation of many new pub visits (unless we move house or I do a lot of travelling this year).  Maybe I’ll try to write a little better…don’t hold your breath on that one, though.

Looking at annual recaps, past:

At 1 year, 290 pubs and impressions on British running, mostly in Cambridgeshire
2 years saw more maps (2000+ miles that year), travel, and 240 more pubs
3 years ended with 280 pubs and links about another house move
The 4th year ended with 255 more pubs, another house move, and some brilliant racing
Year 5 yielded 134 pubs, some decent travel, and yet another house move
The 6th year entry was very brief, but the anniversary kind of snuck up on me (only 95 pubs)
