Best Kebab Chicken Burgers van, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire   1 comment

After the Red Lion, the rain diminished to a light mist and on my next pass through the centre I decided to stop for some supper at the BKCB van.  The döner meat was an unappealing beige colour but perfectly tasty.  I walked toward the Chequers (write-up soon) as I ate and was soon shadowed by a border collie gazing up at me with love and affection — beggar.  “Don’t be mean,” said a fellow who seemed to know this little tramp; he was right, as I had more than I should eat.

“It’s got chilli sauce on,” I warned as I held aloft the first of several bites we shared.

“Oh, he loves that.  Perhaps he’ll share some with me, as well,” said another fellow that knows the first.  Me and the dog finished our treat then joined the other two as we entered the pub.

Kenton Kebab BBQ, Kenton, Middlesex   Leave a comment

The documentation photo (above) of the empty tray is not so much a testament to how good the kebab from Kenton Kebab House was but that I was so hungry that I wolfed down the rapidly freezing grease pie before I remembered to fire the shutter.  It was okay, mind, but only for ballast on a Sunday afternoon between trains when there were rough gastric seas made up of four pints from a four mile run and not any more palatable options to hand.

Kebabland, Harrow, Middlesex   Leave a comment

Ran to Harrow to pick up some USD at a travel money pitch, then opted to enjoy the drizzle whilst hardening my arteries before heading home.  Kebabland, near the station, did the honours and, despite the industrially produced chips, it was a pretty good batch.  Decent chilli sauce comes from a stock pot on the stove not a squirt bottle.  Yum.

Charcoal Grill, Hornchurch, Essex   Leave a comment

It’s good when you recognise that you’ve had too much to drink early enough to stanch it with protein, fat and carbs.  Directly across from the Railway Hotel, I did so at the Charcoal Grill with an order of ‘meat and chips,’ smothered in a surprisingly good chilli sauce.

Working on your gut microbiome?

The meat chilled in the cold wind pretty quickly as I walked a bit of my planned route for the day but this batch didn’t seem as greasy as a lot of these I’ve had in the past (and there have been a lot).  Moreover, the chips were divine.  I now felt capable of downing one more beer for the ride home!

Crumb’s Sandwich Bar, Abingdon, Oxfordshire   1 comment

Forget that the blurry photo looks like Mr Hanky on chips and onions.  Ignore that it took 15 minutes to cook when my bus was due in 10 (and, blessedly, 6 minutes late).  Dismiss the seemingly exorbitant price.  This was the best hunk of lamb and chips I’ve had in a couple of years.  Thank you, folks at Crumbs (I can’t decide if it is plural or possessive).

Oh, it BECAME Mr Hanky the next morning.

Tasty Kebab, Kilburn, London   1 comment

What remaining digestive debris was left from preparing for a colonoscopy had been irrigated away during the procedure by the tube the non-fantasy (no fault of their own) medical techs had snaked up my back passage.  Neither the Beefeater pub (aka, the Travellers Rest) nor the Cock — both of which advertise food — were serving solids.  I was pretty desperate.

How desperate?  Tasty Kebab seemed an apt name right down to the last couple of bites at which point I realised it is actually kind of dreadful.  I ate as I walked around Kilburn and, as I was polishing off the last morsels, spotted the Queen’s Arms and dashed in to try to dissolve the layer of grease left behind.

GB Kebabs, Ruislip, Middlesex   Leave a comment

There is a pharmacy right next to GB Kebab.  This is probably a codicil of the business license.  On the other hand, my gut microbiome will never be healthier or more diverse if I can ever flush away the salt.
