Stove Pipe Stout: Advent Calendar 2016 Christmas Eve   1 comment

Name: Stove Pipe Stout
Brewery: Hobsons
Rating (1-5): 4 out of 5 “It’s Not All Doom and Glooms”

Notes: Neither of us is Christmassy this year but it is Winter and that requires/demands gorging.  I baked a gallon of biscotti to go with the pair of Vin Santos on the wine rack, there’s a round of cornbread soon to be a dressing ingredient for the turkey crown tomorrow, and there’s some raw pizza sauce in the background.  I sold my keyboard on e-Bay and am waiting for the guy to come pick it up (down to just the uke and the guitar).  Jackie begged off the Peanuts Christmas this year but I listened to David Sedaris’ Santaland Diaries on my run a little while ago.  Ho. Ho. Ho.

The other entries on the Advent Calendar are here.

Dragon Stout: Advent Calendar 2016 Day 17   1 comment

Name: Dragon Stout
Brewery: Desnoes & Geddes (but this brewed by Heineken in Edinburgh…Jamaican stout, my arse)
Rating (1-5): 3 out of 5 Santa Benders

Notes: Feeling a bit like St Nick (in the ratings picture, above) after an evening’s drink, I headed into the kitchen to make an egg burrito before bed then remembered the Stout Advent Calendar had not been opened.  I had higher hopes for this carbonated and erstwhile “Jamaican” stout in the half pint bottle but it went well enough with the bedtime breakfast food.

Beer Asylum, Pinner, Middlesex   4 comments

Friday night, I went to Pinner to see if I could round out my candidates for the remaining days in the Sout & Porter Advent Calendar at Beer Asylum.  I probably could have bought the entire 26 days worth there.  “This is a wonderland,” I said to one of the proprietors as I picked up my second 1/2 pint at the bar.  He nodded then smiled broadly — a proud grin — and agreed, almost excitedly, “yes.  It is.  First time here?”  “Mmm-hmm,” I nodded, just as eagerly.  “But, not you’re last?”  I raised an eyebrow, “of course, not.”

I had a BBNo 08/06 (Oatmeal Stout) to start and followed it with an Old Hands Rauch Bier, a Weiß as as German as the Royal Family and brewed not far from their house. I talked with the beardy other proprietor about the new craft beer place opening in Ruislip this weekend and he seemed excited at the prospect of Northwest London becoming a haven for this sort of shop.

Pentonville Oyster Stout: Advent Calendar 2016 Day 15   1 comment

Name: Pentonville Oyster Stout
Brewery: Hammerton
Rating (1-5): 1 out of 5 Deaf, Dumb, and Blind Kids

Notes: Mostly for the pub experience, but the theme of the rating comes from the Tube journey into London this morning:

The beer was passable, although quite thin for a stout — no body at all.  The Advent Calendar continues tomorrow; here’s the lyrics to that song you have stuck in your head, now:

Ever since I moved to London
I’ve ridden the silver train
From Soho up to Ruislip
In sun, sleet and in rain
But I ain’t seen nothing like this
Metropolitan or Central
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Snoozing against the wall!

Revisionist Craft Stout: Advent Calendar 2016 Day 8   1 comment

Name: Craft Stout
Brewery: Revisionist
Rating (1-5): 3 out of 5 of the perfect gift

Notes:  The Gardener’s Arms is probably the best affordable vegetarian restaurant in Oxford as well as quite a good pub. I don’t give them near enough business but it is resolutions season for next year so maybe I can add that to my list. Stopped in too late for lunch on my way back from the Grog Shop laden with bottles of stout and porter for the rest of the Advent calendar.

The beer was a bit thin and weak.  I had their Cherry Stout a few weeks ago in the Carpenter’s Arms in London and found it lacking, as well.

Hook Norton Double Stout: Advent Calendar 2016 Day 5   1 comment

Name: Double Stout
Brewery: Hook Norton
Rating (1-5): 4 out of 5 Tree Mishaps

Notes: On this date in 1933, the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, thereby repealing the 18th Amendment and proving that Americans have both the capacity to fuck things up royally AND tend to sort their messes … eventually.  Coincidentally, I am drinking today’s Advent beer whilst reading an article about Trump in yesterday’s paper (I shouldn’t need to supply any further details).
